BARB

BARB stands for 'Broadcasters Audience Research Board'. It shows the amount of viewers that watch a certain TV program at the same time, the figures are then put into a leader board which ranks the shows from most to least watched.

The website is used mainly by advertising and media companies so they can find out which channels their adverts would be most suitable to be shown on. Companies with a large advertising budget can advertise on the most watched channels at prime time.

'Two Door Cinema Club' Song Lyrics

This is an analysis of the lyrics sung by the artist we have chosen to create a music video for. Our artist is 'Two Door Cinema Club'. We have analysed the Chourus, Verse and Bridge section of the song and explained what shots we will film in each of them.

Sampling Method

There are various ways in which we could choose to select candidates for our questionnaire. I have created a table below explaining the possible methods and the advantages and disadvantages of them:
After reviewing the possibilties of sampling methods when we distribute our questionnaire, we have decided that quota sampling will be the best method. This is because we need the answers to be accurate and will only try to ask people who fit into our target audience. This means that we will be able to see if the video we are making will be liked by the people we are targeting at. It will be harder than accidental sampling to find candidates to answer the questionnaire but should be worth it to ensure accuracy of answers.

Research of our Songs Institution

Two Door Cinema Clubs current record label is Kitsuné Maison. This was a french fashion label created by Gildas Loaec & Masaya Kuroki, they then branched out and became a record label too. They have amassed a respectful amount of catalogue over nearly a 10 year period. They release many different types of genre's but don't stray too far from electronic music, whether this be dance music, or electric indie. For example the have released music from electronic bands like Crystal Castles, Simian Mobile Disco and Delphic and indie bands like Two Door Cinema Club, Foals, and The Drums.

Questionnaire - Target Audience

We have decided to create a questionnaire in order to gain the vital information we need. This questionnaire will be given to people in our chosen demographic, and we will use quota sampling to decide who gets the questionnaire. Here is a screenshot of the questionnaire we will be handing out.

Intended Audience

Importance of the audience
To create an effective music video, it is important that you make it according to the target audience to ensure that it will be suitable for viewers. The audience are imporant to institutions that create music videos because it is them that will be possibly purchasing the music and they must therefore like it.
Without an audience to aim a video at, it is hard to design and create a video that will be effective. We have decided upon an Indie/Alternative style of music and therefore are aiming our video at older teenage indie males. Knowing this will help keep the development of our video on track and will determine the use mise en scene, cinematography, editing and sound to create a successful music video.

Maslows Hierarchy of Needs

I have created a simple version of Maslows Hierarcy of needs. This shows how people work their way up the triangle in stages and very few people make it to the top where they feel that they have achieved their goals.

Artist Background

Two Door Cinema Club are an indie rock band from Northern Ireland. The band consists of Alex Trimble (Lead Vocals, Rhythm Guitar and Keyboards), Sam Halliday (Lead Guitar and Backing Vocals) and Kevin Baird (Bass and Backing Vocals). Forming in 2007, the band gained buzz from MySpace before releasing their debut EP in 2009. After being recognised by French house music duo, Cassius, they then went to record and mix their debut album with Kitsuné Maison.Despite that band not having an official drummer, relying on electronic drum samples they released their debut album 'Tourist History', which charted at 24 in the UK and 22 in Ireland. They then went to release 5 singles from this album, but are most well known for their songs in different adverts and films. Our chosen song 'Do You Want It All' was featured in an advert for Sky Sports in the UK and in films like 'Chalet Girl' and 'I Don't Know How She Does It'.

After touring extensively for nearly two years including several festival slots at Reading and Glastonbury, they have now gone to record a second album in their Glasgow home.

Textual Analysis - Modestep - Sunlight

Modestep are a four-piece Dubstep band from London that formed in 2010. The music that they make always has controversial videos which always spark up a debate. The music video for the song 'Sunlight' shows a group of old people doing things that you wouldn't expect them to do, for example they get drunk and party which you would expect teenagers/young adults to do. This makes the video enjoyable and funny to watch and the music that goes along with the video is very up tempo and puts people in a good mood.

Before the record is put on by the old lady the scene is typical of someone of her age, she is cooking egg and sorting out the house but when the record player is turned on, the track sunlight starts playing and already the mood in the scene goes from boring to entertaining. Modesteps logo is on the record so they use a close up shot to make the audience see it, although the colours in the scene are dull the record stands out and everything else about the scene is happy.
The characters in the scene are riding BMX bikes and scooters which you wouldn't associate with people of their age. They wear old fashioned clothes such as tweed blazers and trousers however they act a lot younger. Again the colours used are vintage and the same colour correction is used throughout the video. They are also in the middle of the road which could mean that they have no care for anything and they just want to live their lives to the fullest.
Another shot which I found very clever was the CCTV camera shot, the CCTV is split into four screens so the actions of each character can be seen at the same time. The characters are stealing drink and terrorising the shop keeper which would not be expected from the older generation. Once again they are not subtle about their actions as they grab as much alcohol as possible and run about the shop with it. They are living a care free life.
The old man in this shot has a beer hat on his head which shows that h. He also looks very happy which shows that he is enjoying himself and having a good time. The room that they are drinking in is very empty with only a table, chairs and speakers. The walls are white and not much light is coming through the windows so the scene looks dull however the faces and activities being shown in the scene are far from dull.
The old lady is smoking weed whilst they are all getting drunk at the table. The weed is getting passed around the table between each character which would not be expected from the older generation. The dubstep being played at this moment in time has a big impact on the way its edited as the music video uses lots of quick cuts and rapid editing. Again the room is empty with only the record player and speakers in the background.
All three characters are sitting on a bench on the street drinking, they are all still in the same outfits that they started in so they look vintage. The colours all fit perfectly with the plot of the music video which makes it all more believable. After they finish drinking they throw their bottles at the wall making the bottle smash everywhere. This would not be expected from the older generation but because of their care free personality they just do what they like.
In this shot the older man has a young, attractive woman sitting on his lap which shows that although he is really old because he acts a lot younger the girl still shows interest in him. Also there is lots of alcohol in the clip which shows that they are all probably drunk. This shot is a lot darker compared to the other previous shots because its filmed at night where as the rest were filmed during the day. The old woman looks a little left out.

The final clip shows the characters in the garden dancing with a policeman who seems to be really getting involved. The old woman had the policeman's hat on, the speakers are blaring the music and the old man is being the DJ. The mise en scene is very different to what would be expected for a rave as they are in an overgrown garden, the DJ equipment and speakers are on an old table however the way its filmed makes it look very effective.

Intended Institution

Films, TV and music are all produced by media institutions, with different institutions favouring a certain area or all 3. For example, ITV produce television programs for their channel, Channel 4 produce TV programs and occasionally films.

We need to decide where our song and video would be played, on what sort of channel and time slot it would be on. We decided that NME TV would be the best suitable channel for our video to played on as it's target audience is similar to ours. They play videos from the mainly indie/rock genre but sometimes branch out to electronic music like dubstep NME TV is a part of the NME organisation, alongside it's magazine, their radio station and websites. NME tend to be involved with catching the latest trends and promoting new artists, but still maintaining interest in existing bands. Existing artists like Muse, Kasabian and Foo Fighters are all promoted regularly in their publications,Two Door Cinema Club is promoted fairly regularly and are currently one of NME's favourite artists where as new and upcoming bands like Viva Brother and Tribes are usually included in the Radar section, which promotes new bands.

Here is a typical schedule of NME TV:
